Commodity Accounting Movement Journal: Improving Auditability and Accuracy
This feature introduces a dedicated movement journal option specifically for commodity accounting inventory postings. Organizations can now define which movement journal inbound tickets use when posting to inventory, instead of relying on a generic adjustment journal.
Why does this matter?
Movement journals allow the offset account to be defined per transaction. This gives commodity accounting precise control over how inventory increases and decreases hit the general ledger without interference from other inventory or manufacturing processes.
How to Set Up
Define which inventory movement journal commodity accounting uses when posting inbound tickets:
Navigate to Commodity Accounting > Setup > Commodity Accounting Parameters.
- In the Tickets tab (Inbound Tickets fast tab), select the Movement journal under the Inventory posting section.
- This journal must be an inventory movement journal defined in Inventory management > Setup > Journal names > Inventory.

Configure Commodity Posting Accounts
Define the posting accounts that will be used as offsets when inbound tickets post to inventory:
- Go to Inventory management > Setup > Posting > Posting.
- Open the Commodity tab.
- Configure ledger accounts for the following transaction types:
- Inventory expenditure, profit
- Inventory expenditure, loss
- These transaction types support Item code values of All, Group, or Table, allowing flexibility by commodity or item group.
- During upgrade, existing posting setups from the Inventory tab are automatically copied to the Commodity tab so current clients see no interruption.

Once configured:
- Ticket numbers automatically populate on movement journal lines, making it easy to trace journal entries back to the originating inbound ticket.

- Financial dimensions default from the item (and site, if configured as a financial dimension).
- All inventory posting scenarios—gross quantity, shrink, reversals, and re-postings—use the movement journal consistently.
Clearer Posting, Cleaner General Ledger
With this update:
- Inbound ticket postings use movement journals tied directly to commodity accounting.
- Positive and negative inventory movements automatically reference the correct posting accounts for gains or losses.
- Grain payable balances remain accurate, even when other inventory transactions occur elsewhere in the system.
- Ticket numbers are stored directly on journal lines so you can easily trace GL entries back to the original scale ticket.
Together, these improvements significantly reduce the risk of misstatements and out-of-balance accounts.
Better Traceability, Better Confidence
By separating commodity inventory postings from other inventory activity and strengthening traceability from ticket to ledger, organizations gain:
- Faster audits
- Simpler reconciliations
- Greater confidence in financial reporting
